The Beauty of Natural Light & Film: Why I Choose to Shoot Analog Photography
By Nathan Lau | Nathan Lau Photography
In an age where digital is instant and filters are endless, there's something timeless about slowing down and letting light, film, and intention tell the story.
1. Film Captures Light Like Nothing Else
Natural light is at the heart of my photography. It creates a soft glow, a sense of calm, and a depth that artificial light rarely matches. When paired with film, that light takes on a new life. Film doesn’t just record light—it interprets it. The highlights roll off gently, shadows have character, and skin tones stay natural and glowing. Whether it’s golden hour warmth or soft window light, film renders it all beautifully and truthfully.
2. Imperfection Creates Emotion
With film, every frame is intentional. I don’t fire off 100 shots and pick one. I pause, breathe, compose, and click. That slow, thoughtful process leads to images that are not just technically beautiful, but emotionally rich. Film has quirks—grain, slight shifts in tone, the occasional unexpected magic—that create a sense of nostalgia and authenticity that digital often lacks.
3. The Timeless Quality of Film
There’s a reason your parents’ wedding photos still feel alive. Film has a depth and permanence that digital sometimes struggles to replicate. The tones, the contrast, the way the light dances through the frame—it feels timeless. Shooting on 35mm and medium format film ensures your memories look just as meaningful decades from now as they do today.
4. Medium Format = Next-Level Detail
I shoot both 35mm and 120 medium format film, depending on the moment. Medium format gives me an incredible amount of detail, softness, and dimensionality—perfect for portraits, quiet in-between moments, and editorial-style storytelling. It’s one of the reasons my images have that dreamy, airy quality my clients fall in love with.
5. It Slows Everything Down (In the Best Way)
Film photography isn’t about chasing the perfect shot—it’s about creating space for it to happen. Because each frame matters, sessions with me are slower, more intentional, and deeply present. You’re not performing for a camera; you’re just being, and that’s where the magic happens. Whether I’m photographing a couple in love or a family in their everyday joy, I want you to feel the moment, not just smile for it.
6. It Aligns With What I Value: Presence, Story, & Soul
My approach to photography is about presence over perfection. Film aligns with that in every way. It encourages us to trust the process, embrace the unexpected, and focus on what really matters: connection, emotion, and truth.
